I am a corporate lawyer by profession. I have been married to Stacey for more than 26 years and we have three sons. We live on an acreage in central Iowa with horses, goats, chickens, dogs and cats. I am not a theologian or a trained spiritual director. I am someone who found his way to a real faith later than he expected, and found that the stumbles along the way were not wasted. It has been a long journey to where I am today.

In 2019, if you had asked me whether I would be writing a daily devotional, teaching high school boys about their faith, or running a website, I would have laughed. I believed in God — went to church most Sundays — but I would not have called what I had a relationship. I was frustrated more often than I was at peace, and I had a vague sense that faith was for people who had it more together than I did.

What changed things was a deal I made with my son. He was entering high school and I wanted him to get confirmed — I wasn't entirely sure why, but I knew it mattered. He wasn't enthusiastic about giving up his Wednesday nights. So I made him an offer: if he would go to the classes, I would volunteer too. I figured I would help with paperwork or maybe set up classrooms. I was a little surprised when I ended up assigned to teach the freshman boys.

I had no curriculum, no training, and no real idea what I was doing. What I did have was a promise to keep. So I opened my Bible and started reading. It turns out that if you are going to teach people about Jesus, you have to know Him yourself. And that's what started to happen.

A trip to NCYC — a national Catholic youth conference — changed things further. Watching my son have a real encounter with Christ was one of the most moving things I have experienced as a father. I came home determined not to let that go. A men's faith group, a silent retreat, time in daily prayer — slowly, a real relationship with God started to take shape where before there had just been a vague belief.

Years later, I took a second group of boys to NCYC. They wanted to attend a session on praying with Scripture. On the way home they asked if I would write daily reflections they could follow. This website grew out of that.

Spending time in scripture has helped me grow closer to God and find the joy that can only come from being with Him. I am glad you are here. I hope that you can find something in these reflections to help you along your spiritual journey — whether you are just starting or far ahead of me on the path.
